In 1976, Dave and Judy Rogers were living in Omaha, NE and being avid runners, they found that other sporting goods retailers couldn’t fill the void to meet their running needs. They wanted a store specific to their sport in the area and realized that Lincoln, NE could provide them with that opportunity. After moving to Lincoln, they began a franchised store called The Athlete’s Foot. Business was good for about 25 years but then the franchise started to move away from what the Rogers’ felt was a true running specialty shop. So, when the time came to renew their contract, they decided to take the store under their own wings and it became Lincoln Running Company (LRC). The store has remained in the heart of downtown Lincoln, right next to the University of Nebraska. And for the past 40 years, they have kept runners, walkers, movers and shakers alike, in some of the best running shoes and apparel, gear, nutrition and advice.
“It’s a tribute to our store that at we have survived for 40 years.” They have seen have seen it all without changing their location. “We’re still running specialty and servicing the community. Being able to adapt and evolve with the definition of a runner has helped us cater to everyone.” - Ann Ringlein
Lincoln Running Company is consistently and positively impacting their community. LRC offers a beginning runner’s class called Beginners Luck with 300 to 400 participants every summer! The best part is that even the seasoned runners come back each year to join in on the fun and group training because they know they will learn something new and meet new fellow runners. Other classes are provided throughout the year to help runners meet their goal races like the Lincoln Marathon and the Good Life Halfsy. They also sponsor the Lincoln Running Company Racing Team which consists of a men’s, women’s, masters and coed masters teams!
Other community involvement was started with a local recreation center called the F Street Recreation Center. This program is called Feet First and they provide not only the running and training plans for people at the City Mission and young children from low income families, but they also provide them with gently used shoes in which they can run and train. Many of the LRC staff also volunteer at the local YMCA to teach a strength training class for runners. Cleary, community involvement is a very important part of the store. Ann and her staff have done an amazing job of making each person who walks through their doors feel like a VIP.
