Commitment to the sport

Whirlaway Sports officially opened as a golf shop and range in 1983 and is actually now the oldest family owned golf shop in the country. 5 years later, in 1988, owner Dave Kazanjian opened the doors of Whirlaway Sports Center and the runners of the Merrimack Valley in Massachusetts have never looked back. Whether it be the wildly successful Whirlaway Racing team – the accolades are endless – or the unparalleled service in the store, Whirlaway has been a symbol of commitment to the sport of running at every level

“We focus on everyone, our commitment to the sport at every level, to health and informing people, that’s what we do. My highest compliment I can ever receive is a compliment of my staff."

If you were a runner north of Boston in the 1990’s or 2000’s chances are you know someone who worked with Whirlaway sports, or you worked there yourself! Maggi Murray, the general manager or Whirlaway going on 18 years, credits the end of her personal running career to the success of her role at the store and coaching career at nearby North Andover High school. “I think not being able to run anymore had made me a better coach, I could focus on the kids, genuinely, and not myself” – Maggi Murray.

The passion for running and developing athletes is glaring at Whirlaway. Tucked off highway 110 in Methuen, just passed all the Dunkin Donuts and the Merrimack river, Whirlaway Sports is your high school sophomore’s first job, it’s where your grandmother shops for her walking shoes, it’s where the state champion miler buys his spikes and his father picks up some shoes to run the Turkey trot with him. Whirlaway is for the runners, by the runners. Owner Dave Kazanjian has said the standards of Whirlaway Sports Center are set by the customers. This notion has kept him humble and passionate for 27 years. Check them out. You will not be disappointed. Runners World wasn’t - that’s why they have been the only 8-time winner of ‘50 best running stores’ in Massachusetts.
